Andy – The big challenge is group think. Yesterday in the New York Times Matt Bai framed Obama’s choices as either siding with “centrist reformers” who want to overhaul entitlements, or “traditional liberals” who prefer new levies on the wealthy. But framed that way, he’s given only two equally bad ideas. Regressive consumption taxes aren’t centrist policies and you can’t effectively raise taxes on the wealthy without implementing structural change. If he continues to let reform be guided by insiders with fixed perspectives I see little chance of meaningful change. I’m simply trying to bring fresh eyes to the problem.
I heard you on Joyce Estey’s show on WRNJ this morning. Thank you for thinking outside the box and trying to help people like me who barely get by and fear what the future will bring regarding lack of employment and unaffordable health insurance. Glad there is still somebody who cares about fairness in this world.
